Divemaster

Checking gear before supervising a dive with Underwater Adventures

Your SDI Divemaster course with Underwater Adventures Tasmania is an exciting step: it involves challenge, mastery, responsibility and commitment. It will reward you with the opportunity to meet and work with new people, to travel and work in new places, but perhaps most importantly, to share your passion for diving with others.

During the course you will develop the knowledge and skills that will enable you to lead and supervise divers in a range of situations as well as assist with courses. You’ll also develop demonstration quality diving skills and instructor level knowledge.

At Underwater Adventures, we don’t just run a course – you know that when you finish you have the skills to work as a dive industry professional. You will gain experience in the broadest range of programs and activities – courses, snorkelling activities, youth programs, shore and boat diving. We also offer add-on qualifications that enable you to work as a crew member on a dive boat.

To get started, you must:

  • Be a SDI Advanced Diver and Rescue Diver, or equivalent (with verifiable experience in Deep, Nav and Night / Limited Visibility specialties),
  • Be 18 years or older at the commencement of training,
  • Be medically fit to dive (a current medical certificate is required)
  • Have current first aid and Oxygen Provider qualifications (or these will be included in the DM training)
  • Have logged a minimum of 40 dives.

The course runs for up to 40 hours, roughly equivalent to three full weekends. However, the time will vary according to the time taken to meet performance standards.

As part of the course you will:

  • Give a minimum of 5 briefs/debriefs
  • Show preparation, planning and control in dive management and diving activities
  • Guide a minimum of 4 dives with varying sites and environmental conditions

You’ll also be required to demonstrate:

  • Skin and scuba diving skills
  • Scuba bailout drill
  • Rescue and tow of an unconscious diver

At minimum, your course fee will include:

  • All required course materials
  • All tuition, including pool sessions
  • Four boat dives

Air fills are not included.

Optional extras:

  • Deep, night, navigation, computer nitrox, wreck or other diver specialties
  • Elements of Shipboard Safety
  • Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency

Remember, the course is designed to train you to work as a professional in the dive industry. As a Divemaster you will be responsible for the welfare of other less experienced divers, and the course is not one that can be taken lightly or in which there are short-cuts. The time and expense associated with the course reflects that.

But if you are serious about pursuing something you love, and taking on a leadership role in diving, then it will be worth every cent!
